Robo-Magellan

Power Supply

Concept

Main power for the robot will be provided by a bank of NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) rechargeable batteries. These offer superior energy density compared to conventional NiCads, and have none of the negatives (like memory effect). Specifically, we will be using 9500mAh 1.2v D-cell batteries. Between 12 and 20 will be used to provide 14.4 to 24 volts and 137 to 228 watt-hours of energy storage, depending on final power requirements. Even with all 20 batteries, they will only weigh 7.4lbs combined.
