Robo-Magellan
GPS
Concept
The GPS navigation system will serve as a method of narrowing down the robots location to a small range. This will be most useful for navigation through fairly large areas. We are still evaluating the accuracy of GPS and how much information we are going to actually be able to use from it. One of the issues we will need to contend with is that GPS systems require very good visibility of the sky to operate, and even then the accuracy may not be good enough for our purposes. Because of this the robot will not be reliant on the GPS, but will rather use the GPS to supplement the location information it already has. If the robot is able to accurately determine its position using GPS we will be able to correct its position using that data.
