Sonar Sensors

Concept

The sonar will serve to let the robot avoid obstacles that it might encounter. We have had some success in using sonar modules to accurately measure distances to obstacles up to about 80 inches away. With this information the robot should be able to detect obstacles before encountering them allowing it to make speed and course corrections as necessary. It may also be possible for the robot to supplement its positioning data based off of the known positions of obstacles on the course using the sonar. This may be difficult because of the possibility of false readings and unanticipated obstacles.
